Jesus walked along the shore of the Sea of Galilee and came upon Simon and his fishing partners cleaning their nets. Jesus stepped into Simon’s boat and asked Simon to move the boat a little from land. After teaching the people from the boat, Jesus turned to Simon and said, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch” (Luke 5:4 NKJV).
Simon was thinking the effort would be a waste. If we are honest most of us would have thought, “Seriously? We have been fishing all night and haven’t caught a thing and besides that, we have just cleaned our nets!” That is close to what Simon said but with one huge difference. Simon responded, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” (Luke 5:5). At your word I will launch out into the deep.
The result of Simon’s obedience was an incredible miracle of two boats so full of fish that the boats began to sink. Jesus wants all of His followers to launch out from a shallow faith that hangs near the security of the shore into the deep water of faith! The deep water is where the fishing is best. Deep faith will yield blessing so tremendous we will barely be able to contain it. Notice that Simon had to send for help to handle all of the fish that was caught! I need to move to the deep water. I honestly desire for the spiritual yield in my life to be so large that I would need to beg for help handling the overflow.
Are you willing to launch out into the deep in your prayer life, in studying of the Word, and sharing the Good News with others! What a difference in the spiritual rewards when we are walking in deep faith and Jesus shows us where to fish!
