Can you imagine never again lusting after stuff or sex? No fear driven insecurities. No false humility. No greed. No weapons. No hate. No lies. No secrets. No hurting the ones we love. Forever. No expiration. Bread, milk and cheese all have expiration dates for good reason. Spoiled milk will make you vomit. No one wants to eat moldy bread or cheese. Other than creation itself, nothing in this world lasts. Banking on things that don’t last can lead to big problems. Computers, for example, don’t have an expiration date but, they certainly don’t last! If you haven’t backed up those files, losing a computer can be a frustrating experience. In 1 Peter 1:22-25, Peter quoted Isaiah 40:6-8 which says that grass and flowers fade. People also fade but, the Word of God lasts forever. His Word is enduring. God is eternal and His Word is eternal. Every promise that God has made stands until its fulfillment. 22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart. 23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall,25 but the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you. 1 Peter 1:22-25 (NIV) God’s Word has no expiration date, no “void by” date, or no statute of limitations. His Word never spoils or goes bad. His Word never has to be reworded for a new generation. God has never corrected Himself. He has never had to reverse course. He has never had to undo a single Word. Not once. He has never had to apologize for something He said. His Word stands forever. God never changes. He is unchanging and He is perfect in all of His attributes. When the Word says God’s love endures forever we can rest assured that His love is always there for those who choose to accept His love. God’s promise in John 14 to prepare a place means there will be a place for those who belong to God, no matter if a person lived 500 years ago or they go to be with the Lord today. The promise stands. No fine print. No limited availability. No exception clauses. God’s Word is always fresh. Always nourishing. Even in the warnings, God’s Word is always current. What else in all of this world truly endures forever? The Word lasts but, the truth and power of the Word lasts as well. The works of God last. The salvation found in Christ lasts. Our sin nature leads us to choose the temporary over the forever. The enemy deceives us into believing that those things which will decay, become rust or will be forgotten are worth striving for as a suitable replacement for eternal rewards. Everything ages. Everything. God’s promises to make all things new endures. As does His promise to wipe away every tear and to remove death. God’s promise to give believers a new body lasts forever. He promised to put away the corruptible in exchange for the incorruptible. The mortal for the immortal. No more sinful desires or sinful actions forever. We will have the ability to express honest love forever. The ability to accept others without prejudice forever. No jealousy. No prideful arrogance. Forever. No expiration.
