Pursuing God’s Will for Our Character

I am often amazed at how hard I can go after the things I really want. Can you relate? Unfortunately I don’t always pursue Godly character. I am afraid it will cost more than I am willing to give. How do you think the Lord desires for us to be described?  Consider some of the following: Strong and Courageous – Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and courageous.  Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. – Joshua 1:9 Joyful – Rejoice in the Lord always.  I will say it again: Rejoice!  – Philippians 4:4 Holy – But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: Be holy, because I am holy. – 1 Peter 1:15-16 Wise – Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom.  Though it cost you all you have, get understanding. – Proverbs 4:5 Bearing the fruit of the Spirit – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. – Galatians 5:22-23 Strong, courageous, joyful, holy, wise and bearing the fruit of His Spirit; who would not want to be described this way? That is probably our response, and it is probably not how we see ourselves. Why is that? This is what God commands of us and He always makes possible that which He commands. The question is, “How?” Well, it starts with dependence upon Christ. To that we add obedience, faith, prayer, and Scripture. Pretty soon, there it is.  It is possible. The other question is, “Are we trying?” Ask God to give you a renewed desire to pursue His will for your character. Ask God to make these descriptions true of you.
