I am writing to tell you about an exciting new ministry called Entrusted To Teach. Over the past eighteen months God has done amazing things that led to the launch of a ministry which seeks to assist churches and pastors to equip small group Bible teachers.
We live in a time when fewer than half of all adults can name the four gospels and more than half of all graduating high school seniors believe Sodom and Gomorrah were husband and wife. Twelve percent of Americans believe Joan of Arc was Noah’s wife. Sadly, the survey results for professing Christians were not very different.
At the very same time, church attendance is dropping and Bible teaching within many churches is not the priority it once was. My experience teaching in several churches has taught me that many small group Bible teachers have never been equipped to teach Scripture or taught how to study God’s Word. Some teachers literally do little more than read or recite a lesson someone else wrote. Often, when a new teacher is needed, someone hands a willing volunteer a book of prepared lessons, pats them on the back and says, “You’ll be fine.” There is a glaring failure to prioritize the role of the Holy Spirit in Bible study, lesson preparation and presentation.
Dr. Al Molher, President of Southern Baptist Seminary, called biblical illiteracy a scandal in the church. Molher said, “We will not believe more than we know, and we will not live higher than our beliefs. The many fronts of Christian compromise in this generation can be directly traced to biblical illiteracy in the pews and the absence of biblical preaching and teaching in our homes and churches.”
